University of Luzon Faculty Researchers Present Studies at 13th HCU International Conference in Thailand

International research exchange brought two University of Luzon faculty members to Thailand for the 13th HCU National and International Academic Conference held on July 23–24, 2026. The conference took place at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University in Bangphli District, Samutprakarn, Thailand, bringing together researchers and educators from different institutions. With the theme “SDG in Action: Best Practices, Challenges, and Trends,” the conference provided a venue for academic exchange, research sharing, and discussions on sustainable development.

Representing the University of Luzon were Dr. Jeanica C. Joson and Prof. Margie D. Viado, who presented their respective studies before an international audience.

Dr. Joson presented “Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals: An Analysis of SDGs Implementation in the Municipality of Labrador, Pangasinan.” She co-authored the study with Prof. Darwin M. Juguilon, Prof. Ma. Theresa H. Bianzon, Prof. Alvin O. Carillo, and Dr. Ma. Emma J. Tuvera. The study was developed through the Localization of SDGs in Pangasinan Project of the Provincial Government of Pangasinan through the Center for Pangasinan Studies, in partnership with consortium higher education institutions, including UL. It used participatory research and community participation to examine how the SDGs can be applied at the local level.

Prof. Viado presented “Mental Health and Service Quality of Student Peer Counselors in an Autonomous Higher Education Institution,” co-authored with Dr. Paulita G. Boado, Dr. Imelda E. Cuartel, Prof. Glory Ann B. Feliciano, and Dr. Carmelo John E. Vidal. The study examines the relationship between mental health and service quality among student peer counselors, offering insights that can support student services and a positive learning environment.

In addition to the research presentations, the University of Luzon was recognized as a co-host institution and received a Co-host Certificate during the conference. UL also featured its Sustainable Practices Report through a video presentation, sharing the university community’s efforts toward sustainability. Through these activities, UL contributed to knowledge exchange and strengthened its participation in international academic partnerships.

Research and international academic engagement help strengthen learning, collaboration, and community participation. These efforts support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being is supported by research on mental health and student peer counseling that can help improve student support systems; SDG 4: Quality Education is advanced through professional education, research, and continuous learning; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure is supported through research development and innovative approaches to community concerns; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities is strengthened through studies that inform municipal and urban development; SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions is advanced through participatory research, community engagement, and informed public decision-making; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals is promoted through international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and partnerships among universities and other institutions.
