Bill Gates, Microsoft’s co-founder, was once quoted as saying, “I believe in innovation and that the way you get innovation is you fund research and you learn the basic facts.” In fact, it is often the case that the most fundamental studies yield the most revolutionary findings. There is no need to make research a herculean task. It could begin with a very simple inquiry. But the answers to such questions are sometimes the most insightful of all. But research can’t be done without funding.

The governor of the Philippine province of Pangasinan, Ramon V. Guico III, invited the heads and representatives of the top universities, including our beloved University of Luzon, to a meeting on October 6 to discuss ways in which universities in Pangasinan can improve the quality of research and innovation in the province. Everything from the promotion of basic research to the enhancement of the provincial economy through the development of cutting-edge technologies was on the table. It’s heartening to know that the governor fully appreciates the value of R&D spending. Furthermore, he has been extremely generous in providing extra funding to promote and advance research at our academic institutions.

A research grant has been awarded to the University of Luzon, which will greatly improve the institution’s research capabilities. Being included in the list of recipients of this research grant is a tremendous honor because it serves as validation of the importance of our work and our commitment to excellence. This will pave the way for innovative research that will improve the province and the university alike.
