The University of Luzon’s College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Communicators’ Guild has earned recognition for its short film, “BINHI,” at the PelikulAgraryo 2025 Gala. The event, a student short film festival organized by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Ilocos Region, honored student filmmakers for their work in capturing stories of hope and triumph within the agrarian sector. The gala was held on August 15 at the Vigan Convention Center.

Representing Pangasinan as the sole group to compete in the Agrarian Reform Beneficiary (ARB) category, the Communicators’ Guild’s film, “BINHI,” received the Best Poster Award. The film’s tagline, “Saan sisibol ang ani ng bukas?” (Where will the harvest of tomorrow sprout?), encapsulates its narrative of a farming family struggling with the potential loss of the land they have farmed for 28 years. The film’s story of strength, legacy, and the link between land and livelihood aligns with the festival’s theme, “Pag-ani sa mga Pangarap: Mga Kwento ng Pag-asa at Tagumpay sa Agraryo” (Harvest of Dreams: Agrarian Stories of Hope and Success).

Students Harvey Dave Magdaraog, Mariel Guiling, Lyka Heart Ramos, and John Carlo Laconsay represented the university at the festival, showcasing their teamwork and dedication. The project was made possible with the support of University of Luzon President Dr. Luis M. Samson Jr. and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Dr. Carmelita S. Quinto, who provided funding for the film’s production. The DAR Ilocos Region also supported the students by covering event-related costs, including transportation, meals, and accommodations. This allowed the team to concentrate on presenting their work and gaining exposure to regional cinema and social advocacy through film.

This achievement by our Luzonians underscores the vital role of storytelling in raising social awareness and fostering community pride. It exemplifies how collaboration among students, educators, and government agencies can support creative endeavors that address real-life issues. “BINHI’s” success serves as an inspiration for aspiring filmmakers and demonstrates the power of youth voices from institutions like the University of Luzon in shaping important narratives.

The “BINHI” short film project and its recognition align with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By highlighting the struggles and resilience of farming communities, the film directly contributes to SDG 2: Zero Hunger, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture. The focus on land rights and the livelihood of agrarian families also supports SDG 1: No Poverty, as it addresses the economic challenges faced by those living in rural areas. Furthermore, the collaborative nature of the project—involving students, faculty, and a government agency—demonstrates a commitment to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, fostering cooperation to achieve broader societal objectives.
