On July 1, 2024, the University of Luzon Laboratory School, under the guidance of the College of Education, successfully hosted its annual Students’ Wellness Day. This year’s event, themed “Growing Together in Love and Faith,” underscored the importance of fostering positive and supportive student-teacher relationships within the school community.

Held in the multi-purpose hall from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the program featured a thought-provoking presentation by Professor Glory Anne B. Feliciano, the Admin Affairs Manager and HR Officer of Cuison Dialysis Center. Professor Feliciano’s talk, titled “Fostering Socio-Emotional Learning Towards Healthy Student-Teacher Relations,” offered valuable insights on how to cultivate a school environment that prioritizes both academic achievement and the emotional well-being of students.

Cultivating Social-Emotional Skills for Stronger Bonds

Professor Feliciano’s presentation centered on the importance of socio-emotional learning (SEL) in fostering healthy student-teacher relationships. She emphasized that SEL skills equip students with the ability to manage their emotions, build positive relationships with others, and make responsible decisions. These skills are crucial not only for academic success but also for navigating the complexities of social interactions and developing a strong sense of self.

Professor Feliciano introduced a particularly insightful acronym, SHARE, which stands for “Speak your emotions,” “Help others,” “Acknowledge other people’s emotions,” “Reciprocate kindness,” and “Embrace your emotions.” This framework provided a practical guide for students to navigate their social interactions and build trust with their teachers. By learning to express their emotions constructively, students can foster open communication with their educators, leading to a more supportive and understanding classroom environment. Similarly, by demonstrating empathy and kindness towards their peers, students can contribute to a positive and inclusive school culture.

A Holistic Approach to Education

The event resonated deeply with the Laboratory School’s commitment to fostering a holistic educational experience. By prioritizing the emotional well-being of students, the school creates an environment conducive to learning and personal growth. Healthy student-teacher relationships, built on mutual respect and understanding, are fundamental to this endeavor. Professor Feliciano’s emphasis on SEL skills provided a valuable roadmap for achieving this goal.

Students’ Wellness Day at the University of Luzon Laboratory School served as a significant reminder of the multifaceted nature of education. While academic excellence remains a central focus, fostering positive social-emotional development is equally important. By equipping students with the tools to manage their emotions, build strong relationships, and make responsible choices, the Laboratory School empowers them to thrive not only within the classroom, but also in their personal lives.

Empowering Students for the Future

Through such initiatives, the University of Luzon continues its dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals prepared to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Students who develop strong SEL skills are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world. They can build strong relationships, manage stress effectively, and make sound decisions. This foundation paves the way for success in their academic pursuits, future careers, and personal lives. Students’ Wellness Day at the Laboratory School serves as a testament to the University of Luzon’s commitment to providing a truly holistic education that prepares its students for a bright future.
