Posted on 19th of Aug 2025 by UL AdministratorUniversity of Luzon recently hosted a significant event, the “Journey to Recovery: A Testimonial and Awareness Program.” Held on August 18, 2025, at the UL Multipurpose Hall, the initiative aimed to educate students on the realities of substance use, rehabilitation, and the vital role of support systems. The program was a collaborative effort between the University’s Office of the Guidance Center, the Youth Peer Organization – UL, and UL – Psychenosi, in partnership with the Department of Health Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (DOH DTRC) Dagupan.
The event began with powerful messages from university leaders, including Dr. Luis M. Samson Jr., the University President, Prof. Nash B. Aquino, Assistant Director for Student Affairs, and Prof. Liberato A. Reyna III, the University Nurse. Their speeches emphasized the institution’s commitment to holistic student development, active student participation, and health advocacy as cornerstones of a resilient academic community. Mr. Karl Anthony S. Rufo, a Psychologist, introduced the program’s objectives, setting the stage for the day’s activities.
The core of the program featured a comprehensive lecture on drug awareness by Dr. Isagani A. Salamanca, who provided invaluable insights into the complexities of substance use and the process of rehabilitation. The event was made especially poignant by the personal testimonials of recovering Persons Who Use Drugs (PWUDs). Their courageous stories of struggle, resilience, and healing provided a firsthand look at the realities of addiction and recovery, fostering empathy among the Luzonians.
Following the testimonials, students participated in an interactive activity facilitated by a team of mental health professionals, including Mr. Karl Anthony S. Rufo, RPsy, Ms. Ira Mae D. Palad, RPm, Mr. Patrick Jesus Q. Poserio, RPm, and Ms. Allysa Joy A. Garcia, RPm. This segment allowed Luzonians to gain a deeper understanding of the rehabilitation process and the crucial importance of strong support systems. The program concluded with a Commitment Pledge from the students, with encouraging final words from Prof. Margie D. Viado, OIC of the Guidance Center. This event successfully educated students on substance abuse, raised awareness about rehabilitation, fostered compassion, and empowered young people to make informed, healthy choices.
The “Journey to Recovery” program directly aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), demonstrating the University of Luzon’s commitment to global development initiatives. By promoting good health and well-being and educating students on the risks of substance use, the activity directly supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. The provision of transformative and values-based learning to students is in line with SDG 4: Quality Education. Furthermore, the program’s efforts to combat the stigma associated with drug use and recovery help to reduce inequalities, thereby supporting SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. Finally, the strategic collaboration between the University of Luzon and the Department of Health exemplifies SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, showcasing how collective action can create a more resilient and empowered community.
