Posted on 9th of Dec 2025 by UL AdministratorThe University of Luzon debate team recently showcased its intellectual rigor and oratorical skill at the prestigious Pangasinan Debate Tournament 2025, an event hosted by SPEED UP: Speech and Debate Guild. Stepping onto the provincial stage, the Luzonians distinguished themselves among a competitive field of 32 teams drawn from institutions across Pangasinan. The team’s journey, which extended to a commendable Round 3 finish, underscored the core belief encapsulated in the motivating motion of the tournament: that participating in such high-level discourse fundamentally elevates a student’s confidence, sharpens critical thinking, and cultivates fearless public speaking abilities. The experience served not merely as a test of skill but as a significant milestone in intellectual and personal development for the representatives of the University.
Representing the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), the dedicated debaters navigated complex argumentation and demanding tournament schedules with exceptional poise and preparation. The team was composed of third-year AB Political Science students Iyan Palisoc and Venice Alexis Ico, alongside second-year AB Political Science student Jazmine Kaye Prestoza. These students exemplified the ideal of the Luzonian scholar, demonstrating resilience in managing last-minute case preparation and deftly handling multiple Points of Information (POIs) posed by opponents. Their performance was a powerful testament to their discipline and commitment to mastering the art of persuasive rhetoric, successfully arguing their positions with conviction and strategic clarity under pressure. Their accomplishments bring immense pride to the entire University community.
The success of the team is intrinsically linked to the guidance provided by their coach and adviser, Professor Richard Dhean Villamor. The University extends its sincere gratitude to Professor Villamor for his unwavering mentorship, strategic coaching, and for instilling in the students the crucial understanding that confidence remains a speaker’s greatest asset, even in moments of mental challenge. Furthermore, the College of Liberal Arts is recognized for its vital role in fostering an environment of rigorous academic pursuit and providing the essential foundation and encouragement that enabled the students to stand firm and represent the University with distinction and heart. This tournament participation marks a pivotal starting point, signaling the University of Luzon’s strong commitment to establishing a formidable and enduring presence in the competitive debate arena for years to come.
These endeavors are highly relevant to the University of Luzon’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The team’s participation directly aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education by cultivating advanced communication, research, and critical thinking skills essential for future leadership and employment. By fostering civil discourse and the ability to articulate complex policy positions, the debate activity contributes to the principles of SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, promoting inclusive societies and effective, accountable governance. Moreover, their engagement in a provincial tournament reinforces SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by building inter-institutional relationships and fostering collaborative intellectual growth within the wider community.
