University of Luzon and Partners Champion Inclusion During International Disability Awareness Workshop
Posted on 10th of Dec 2025 by UL AdministratorIn a powerful demonstration of its unwavering commitment to inclusivity and social equity, the University of Luzon (UL) successfully hosted the 2025 International Disability Awareness and Sensitivity Workshop on December 9, 2025, from 7:30 AM to 12:00 NN. Held at the UL Multipurpose Hall, the highly successful event was organized by the UL Guidance Center in collaboration with the Youth Peer Organization, Psychenosi, and the Dagupan Autism Society, Inc. (DASI). Operating under the resonant theme, “Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Advancing Disability Inclusion Together,” the workshop served as a critical platform to move beyond mere recognition, aiming instead to deepen understanding, challenge ingrained misconceptions, and cultivate a robust, university-wide culture of empathy, respect, and proactive inclusion for all persons with disabilities. This initiative underscores the University of Luzon’s foundational belief that a truly excellent educational institution must be accessible and empowering to every member of the community.
The day’s schedule was precisely structured to blend formal ceremony with profound learning. Following the morning registration, the program formally commenced with the Opening Ceremonies, which included the invocation, the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, and the UL Hymn. Mr. Luis Santiago B. Samson III, Director for Student Affairs and Services, delivered the official Opening Remarks, setting an inspirational and institutional tone for the day’s objectives. Following the welcome, Guidance Designates Sharmaine Salome Lopez, RPm, CHRA, and Camilla Franceska Zacheri D. Fernandez introduced the day’s distinguished speakers, ensuring a seamless transition into the core educational segments.
The substantive component of the workshop began with the first of two pivotal plenary talks, titled “Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Advancing Disability Inclusion Together,” expertly facilitated by Ms. Elaine J. Estrada, President of the Dagupan Autism Society, Inc. Ms. Estrada’s session provided a compelling overview of the current landscape of disability inclusion, powerfully articulating the collective responsibility that rests upon educational institutions and local communities. Her message inspired a deeper awareness among attendees regarding the necessity of actively designing accessible, supportive, and empowering environments, reinforcing that inclusion is not a choice, but a fundamental prerequisite for a thriving society. Following this powerful call to action, the workshop shifted its focus to tangible communication skills. Dr. Leah M. Surot, a Master Teacher II, SNED Coordinator, and Certified Sign Language Interpreter from West Central Elementary School, delivered the second plenary session on “Basic Sign Language to Communicate with the Deaf Community.” Dr. Surot’s session was invaluable, emphasizing the crucial importance of communication access as a gateway to true participation by equipping participants with foundational sign language skills.
A definitive and long-lasting highlight of the event was the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the University of Luzon and the Dagupan Autism Society, Inc. This official commitment marks a major step forward, laying the foundation for long-term collaboration, the development of joint inclusive programs, and the continuous strengthening of disability support initiatives. The MOU signing was followed by an interactive Ice Breaker Activity and an Open Forum, which allowed Luzonians to engage directly with the experts, fostering a candid exchange of ideas and questions. The formal proceedings concluded with a meaningful Pledge of Commitment Activity by the participants, and the Closing Remarks delivered by Ms. Michelle Angela T. Santos, President of Psychenosi. The University of Luzon extends its profound gratitude to the distinguished speakers, dedicated partners, and all participants whose engagement, alongside the professional coordination of Masters of Ceremonies Kenneth Paul O. Ferrer and Justine Margarette C. Calimoso, made this workshop both impactful and purposeful, affirming the shared commitment that together, we break barriers, build futures, and champion inclusion.
The comprehensive activities undertaken during the International Disability Awareness and Sensitivity Workshop directly reinforce the University of Luzon’s dedication to several key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The focus on proactive support and well-being aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), while the drive to create universally accessible educational settings and provide communication skills directly supports SDG 4 (Quality Education). By actively challenging discrimination and promoting the full participation of persons with disabilities, the University significantly contributes to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Furthermore, the commitment to institutional and community partnerships, cemented by the formal MOU, is a tangible step toward achieving SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), ensuring inclusivity in urban development, and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), by promoting non-discriminatory and inclusive decision-making. Finally, the strategic collaboration between the University, DASI, and other groups exemplifies the spirit and requirements of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), demonstrating how concerted effort is essential to realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
