The University of Luzon’s College of Education recently reaffirmed its dedication to shaping the next generation of educators during a significant three-day training event. From August 18 to 20, 2025, representatives from the college, Dr. Imelda E. Cuartel and Prof. John Norman C. Rodriguez, participated in the “Designing for Success: A Training on LEPT Program Development for TEI Administrators in Region 1,” held at Mariano Marcos State University in Batac City, Ilocos Norte. The event provided a unique opportunity for them to engage with Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, the esteemed Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), who served as the keynote speaker.

Dr. Agrupis delivered a powerful message, emphasizing that the role of teachers extends far beyond passing a licensure examination. “It is not just about passing the licensure or elevating scores; it is about the quality, the commitment, and the power of education to transform the country,” she stated. This perspective aligns perfectly with the University of Luzon’s vision, which recognizes that Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) must serve as crucibles for future agents of change. The goal, she underscored, is to nurture leaders who possess not only academic excellence but also the moral fortitude to uphold values and create a lasting societal impact.

Inspired by this call to action, the University of Luzon’s College of Education remains steadfast in its mission. The college is not solely focused on ensuring its graduates are employed; it is committed to preparing Luzonians for long-term contributions to their communities and the nation. By continuously reviewing its policies, standards, and guidelines for teacher education programs, the college ensures that the curriculum integrates essential soft skills alongside the technical demands of a rapidly evolving regional and global landscape. This proactive approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped to meet contemporary challenges and lead with purpose. The University of Luzon extends its sincere gratitude to Mariano Marcos State University for hosting this vital training, and a special thanks to program leader Dr. Aris Reynold V. Cajigal and Dr. Ronald Candy S. Lasaten, Dean of the College of Teacher Education, for the invaluable insights provided.

The activities and vision highlighted in this event are deeply resonant with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By focusing on the holistic development of future educators and their role as agents of change, the College of Education contributes directly to SDG 4: Quality Education, ensuring inclusive and equitable education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. The emphasis on soft skills and long-term societal contributions also aligns with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, as it prepares graduates not just for employment but for productive, impactful careers that drive economic development. Furthermore, by molding educators into leaders who can positively transform their communities, the university is a crucial partner in achieving SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, as quality education is a foundational element of resilient and thriving societies.
