University of Luzon Participates in NUJP Training on Ethical Journalism for Campus Journalists

Responsible journalism plays an important role in helping students understand the value of accurate information, ethical reporting, and informed public participation. The University of Luzon took part in the Ethical Journalism Training for Campus Journalists organized by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).

The training was held on June 3, 2026, at Universidad de Dagupan, bringing together student journalists, communication majors, and faculty members from different institutions. Representing the University of Luzon were College of Liberal Arts faculty members Mr. Raymond Albert Esguerra, Ms. Maria Czarina Caoile, and Ms. Arianne Angela Balaoing, together with Mariel Guiling, a third-year BA Communication student representative. The invitation for the University to participate in the activity came through Ahikam D. Pasion of Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan.

The session focused on the updated NUJP Journalist’s Code of Ethics, with discussions covering digital reporting, social media responsibilities, and responsible coverage of sensitive community issues. With disinformation and other challenges affecting modern journalism, the training provided practical knowledge and skills that can help future journalists assess information, report responsibly, and uphold ethical standards.

The activity further strengthened the University of Luzon’s efforts to support professional education and prepare students and faculty for responsible participation in the media and wider community. It also highlighted the role of communication education in developing critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and social responsibility.

Continuous learning in journalism helps strengthen informed communities and responsible participation in society. The initiative contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting media literacy, professional training, and skills development among future communicators; and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions by encouraging responsible reporting, accurate information, public participation, and efforts to counter disinformation.
