Research that amplifies the voices of underserved communities earned international recognition as Ms. Arianne Angela D. Balaoing, faculty member of the College of Liberal Arts – Psychology Program, received the Best Presentation Award – Criminal Justice Category during the International Research and Innovation Summit (IRIS) 2026 hosted by First City Providential College in San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan, Philippines.

Ms. Balaoing was recognized for her study, “Understanding the Challenges and Child-Rearing Experiences of Mothers Deprived of Liberty in Dagupan City Jail Female Dormitory.” Employing a participatory approach, the research explored the lived experiences of incarcerated women, providing valuable insights into the emotional, psychological, and social realities they face while fulfilling their parenting roles within correctional settings.

The study shows the importance of strengthening mental health interventions, family-centered support systems, and rehabilitation programs that promote dignity and reintegration. It also highlights the need for greater social inclusion and support for marginalized populations whose experiences are often overlooked in policy discussions and public discourse.

By contributing to conversations on restorative justice and human rights, the research encourages stakeholder engagement in developing more responsive and humane approaches to correctional management and community support. The findings demonstrate how education and evidence-based inquiry can help address complex social issues and inspire meaningful change.

This achievement reflects the University of Luzon’s commitment to advancing learning, research excellence, and social responsibility through studies that address pressing societal concerns and contribute to nation-building. It also highlights the University’s dedication to producing research that informs policy, strengthens communities, and promotes a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Ms. Balaoing’s award-winning research demonstrates the transformative power of social science research in addressing the needs of vulnerable and marginalized populations. This accomplishment aligns with the following UN SDGs: SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by promoting mental health awareness and psychosocial support for mothers deprived of liberty and their families; SDG 4 (Quality Education) through education and active learning that generate evidence-based solutions to social challenges; SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by highlighting the experiences of women and advocating for gender-responsive interventions; SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by promoting social inclusion and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities; and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through a participatory approach, stakeholder engagement, and the promotion of human rights.
