University of Luzon Civil Engineering Students Spearhead Humanitarian Effort for Local Elder
Posted on 12th of Mar 2026 by UL AdministratorIn a poignant display of civic responsibility and compassion, a group of third-year Civil Engineering students from the University of Luzon recently mobilized a community-wide relief effort to support a homeless elderly woman in Dagupan City. The initiative, led by Princess Icy Calvadores, Rhea Caoile, Regine Cacho, Angela Catabay, Estiphanie Alvareda, and Jenny Sanchez, began as a simple observation of a vulnerable citizen and evolved into a significant charitable campaign that has resonated across the local community. The students had frequently observed the elderly woman residing along Rivera Street during their evening commutes and became particularly concerned upon noticing visible physical injuries on her person. Demonstrating a proactive approach to community welfare, the group initially suspected the wounds resulted from a canine encounter and immediately coordinated with local barangay officials to ensure the woman’s safety and medical assessment. While officials later determined the injuries were not caused by a dog bite, the intervention marked the beginning of a dedicated mission to improve the elder’s living conditions.
The momentum for this charitable endeavor accelerated significantly after Calvadores documented the woman’s plight in a video shared on the social media platform TikTok on February 22. The digital dispatch quickly gained viral traction, capturing the attention of a wide audience and prompting a surge of altruistic contributions from concerned citizens moved by the elder’s circumstances. Utilizing the funds and resources gathered through these public donations, the students procured essential supplies, including groceries, vital medications, and hygiene products. On a subsequent visit, the group personally delivered these items to the woman on Rivera Street, providing not only material relief but also a sense of dignity and hope to a marginalized member of the Dagupan City population. This act of service by the Civil Engineering cohort serves as a testament to the character of the University of Luzon student body, illustrating how technical academic paths can be harmoniously balanced with a profound commitment to social advocacy and the protection of the vulnerable.
This initiative by our fellow Luzonians directly aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 1: No Poverty and Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. By facilitating access to nutrition and essential medical supplies, these students addressed the immediate effects of extreme poverty and sought to stabilize the health of an individual lacking a formal support system. Furthermore, their actions support Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, as they actively worked to include and protect a senior citizen often overlooked by broader societal structures. Through this grassroots mobilization, the University of Luzon continues to demonstrate its role in fostering graduates who are not only technically proficient but are also socially conscious global citizens dedicated to sustainable community development.
