The Whistle Blows on Learning: University of Luzon Students Sharpen Sports Officiating Skills
Posted on 23rd of Aug 2025 by UL AdministratorThe halls of the University of Luzon buzzed with focused energy as the College of Education, Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) program, hosted a pivotal one-day Re-Echo Seminar and Workshop on Officiating and a Refresher Course in Basketball and Volleyball. Held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, this event provided an invaluable platform for Luzonians to enhance their technical competence and professional readiness, preparing them for future roles as educators and sports leaders. The day’s activities were thoughtfully divided to maximize both theoretical knowledge and practical application, with the morning session dedicated to seminars at the University of Luzon’s third-floor library and the afternoon session moving to the Don Luis F. Samson Sr. Estadio for hands-on experience.
The morning’s proceedings began with a warm welcome from Professor Daniel Xerxes S. Padrid, followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Imelda E. Cuartel, Dean of the College of Education, who underscored the importance of the event in shaping the next generation of physical education professionals. The students then had the privilege of learning from distinguished resource speakers who are experts in their respective fields. For volleyball officiating, Mr. Melvin Biason provided insights into the rules and regulations, while Ms. Rianna Ricaela M. Fernandez focused on the critical roles of table officials. The basketball officiating segment featured Mr. Stephen M. Juguilon, who covered refereeing rules and mechanics, and Ms. Ada Eunice O. Abner, who delved into the duties of table officials. Their valuable insights not only deepened the students’ understanding of the rules but also emphasized the importance of professionalism and integrity in officiating.
As the day progressed, the action shifted to the Don Luis F. Samson Sr. Estadio for the practical application of their newfound knowledge. The afternoon workshop was a testament to the students’ dedication, as they actively engaged in real-game scenarios, demonstrating their ability to apply rules, manage the game, and ensure fair play. This hands-on experience proved that true learning extends far beyond the confines of the classroom, allowing students to translate theory into practice and build confidence in their skills. The success of the event was a collaborative effort, made possible by the guidance of the advisers, the leadership of the officers, and the enthusiastic participation of every student. It was a day of learning, growth, and game-changing experiences, highlighting the program’s commitment to producing well-rounded and highly capable physical education practitioners.
This successful seminar-workshop directly contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By enhancing the skills and professional readiness of future educators, the event supports SDG 4: Quality Education, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. The focus on sports officiating and fair play aligns with SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, as it promotes the rule of law and ethical conduct. Moreover, by fostering physical education and sports leadership, the initiative contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, promoting healthy lifestyles and well-being at all ages, and SDG 5: Gender Equality, by creating an inclusive environment where both male and female students can excel in sports leadership roles.
