At the 9th International Nurse Education Conference (NETNEP 2024) in Singapore, held from October 27-30, 2024, the University of Luzon College of Nursing (UL-CON) proudly showcased the resilience, growth, and dedication of its researchers in the field of nursing. Their research journey reached new heights, as they were honored with recognition at this prestigious global event, centered around the theme “From Disruption to Innovation in Nursing and Midwifery: Celebrating and Driving Outcomes Through Education.”

The research presentation, titled “Challenges in Academic Performance Among Nursing Students During Flood Disasters at a University in Dagupan City”, is a testament to UL-CON’s commitment to innovative research in healthcare. Led by our dynamic Dean Jordan Llego, along with dedicated students Ms. Princess Erika Permison, Ms. Jhancy Ico, and Mr. Jan Riendel Caalim, this research explores the impact of natural disasters, particularly floods, on nursing students’ academic performance. It highlights the unique challenges faced by students in disaster-prone regions, such as Dagupan City, and the importance of addressing these issues to drive educational outcomes in times of crisis.

This event is an example of the University of Luzon’s active engagement and commitment to sustainable development, a value that is deeply embedded in its mission. By promoting research that addresses real-world challenges like disaster response and recovery, UL is contributing to several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

– SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – The research underscores the importance of health education in disaster settings, ensuring that future healthcare workers are prepared to handle such crises.

– SDG 4: Quality Education- UL-CON’s work in exploring the academic challenges faced by nursing students during floods highlights the university’s dedication to providing inclusive, accessible, and quality education, especially during emergencies.

– SDG 13: Climate Action – The focus on flood disasters ties directly to climate change adaptation, making the research part of efforts to address the impact of environmental changes on communities and education.

– SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – By participating in global conferences and sharing knowledge, UL is fostering partnerships that drive collective action toward the achievement of the SDGs.

This presentation resonated deeply with the conference theme, as the researchers’ work exemplifies the shift from disruption caused by natural disasters to innovation in education and outcomes. By leveraging education to navigate these challenges, the UL-CON team is driving change and championing practical solutions for the future of nursing and midwifery.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our esteemed researchers for their exceptional work! Your dedication, passion, and hard work inspire us all. Research truly is your playground, and you continue to lead the way in advancing nursing education!
