“Disconnect to Reconnect”: A Peer Counseling Inititiative
Posted on 15th of May 2023 by UL AdministratorThe Guidance Center of the University of Luzon recently spearheaded a significant youth peer counseling initiative from May 8 to 15, 2023. This impactful event, themed “Disconnect to Reconnect,” was a collective effort facilitated by a dedicated team of student counselors, primarily from the AB Psychology program.
The “para-counselors,” as the student counselors were affectionately called, visited various classrooms across the campus to conduct peer counseling sessions. This initiative was open to all collegiate students, regardless of their program or year level.
The core objective of the “Disconnect to Reconnect” theme was to encourage Luzonians to prioritize real-life interactions over digital connections. In an era dominated by technology, it’s easy to become engrossed in the virtual world, neglecting the importance of face-to-face communication. By encouraging students to “unplug,” the initiative aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the value of human connection.
The peer counseling sessions provided a safe and supportive space for students to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The para-counselors, trained in basic counseling techniques, guided the discussions and offered empathetic listening. Through these interactions, students were able to develop essential social skills, such as active listening, empathy, and effective communication.
Moreover, the initiative aimed to help students identify and address mental health concerns. By providing a platform for open dialogue, the peer counseling sessions allowed students to recognize the signs of stress, anxiety, and depression. The para-counselors were equipped to offer guidance and support, and, when necessary, refer students to appropriate mental health professionals.
Beyond mental health, the “Disconnect to Reconnect” initiative also promoted personal growth and self-discovery. By encouraging students to disconnect from their devices, they were able to explore new hobbies, interests, and passions. Whether it was reading a book, practicing a musical instrument, or simply spending time in nature, these activities provided opportunities for self-reflection and rejuvenation.
The success of this peer counseling initiative can be attributed to the dedication and commitment of the para-counselors. Their passion for helping others and their ability to create a welcoming and supportive environment were instrumental in making the event a positive experience for all participants.
The University of Luzon remains committed to fostering a holistic approach to student well-being. By organizing events like the “Disconnect to Reconnect” peer counseling initiative, the institution aims to empower students to build strong relationships, prioritize mental health, and achieve their full potential.
