Conversations about mental health, empathy, and suicide prevention remain important in building a community where people can seek help without fear of judgment. University of Luzon Psychology faculty members took part in the Symposium on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention to deepen their understanding of compassionate care and the challenges surrounding mental health.

Organized by the Philippine Mental Health Association – Pangasinan Chapter, the symposium was held on September 25, 2026, at Metroplaza in Dagupan City. It carried the theme, “Conversations of Hope: Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encouraging open discussions on stigma reduction, empathy, and support for people facing mental health challenges.

The program featured talks from two mental health professionals. Ms. Danielle B. Madero, RPm, Psy, PMHA Consultant Psychologist, discussed “Navigating Challenge: A Guide to Care and Empathy,” while Dr. Rosalina N. Caoile, MD, FPPA, FPCAM, MPH, PMHA Consultant Psychiatrist, presented “Social Stigma: The Silent Barrier.”

Representing the University were psychology program instructors, Prof. Margie D. Viado, Ms. Maria Czarina G. Caoile, Ms. Camilla Franceska Zacheri D. Fernandez, and Ms. Arianne Angela D. Balaoing. Their participation provided an opportunity for continued professional learning and a deeper understanding of how educators can help create a school environment where mental health concerns are met with respect and compassion.

Promoting mental health awareness and encouraging compassionate responses to mental health concerns are important parts of building a supportive community. The activities align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being is advanced by promoting suicide prevention, reducing stigma, and encouraging people to seek appropriate support, while SDG 4: Quality Education is supported through professional education that strengthens educators’ understanding of mental health. SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals is reflected in the exchange of knowledge between the University and community mental health professionals.
