Through the Alliance of Justice of the College of Liberal Arts, the University of Luzon held Project BALOTA: Building Active Leaders for Transparency and Accountability, featuring the seminar “Karapatan Ko: Democracy, A Power Vested Upon Me.” The activity aimed to help young people understand their voting rights and the responsibilities that come with participating in elections.
Held on September 15, 2026, at the University of Luzon Multi-Purpose Hall, the seminar provided a venue for discussions on election rights, political participation, and the value of every vote. It encouraged students to look beyond popularity and misinformation when assessing candidates and to consider their platforms, integrity, and ability to serve the public.
Through discussions on democracy and civic engagement, Project BALOTA encouraged participants to take an active role in shaping the country’s future. It also highlighted how informed citizens can help promote transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership in government. The seminar featured Atty. Nathaniel D. Siaden as the Guest of Honor and Speaker and Hon. Bradley Claude C. Benavides as Guest Speaker.
Atty. Siaden discussed the principle of “Elect to Serve,” emphasizing the connection between voters and the individuals entrusted with public office. Meanwhile, Hon. Benavides discussed the role of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in local government and how young people can participate in local affairs and community decision-making. Their discussions also highlighted the importance of being a registered and responsible voter.
The University of Luzon supports efforts that build informed, active, and responsible citizens. These efforts contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 4: Quality Education promotes learning about election rights and responsible citizenship. SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions encourages political participation, transparency, and public accountability. SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals highlights collaboration in promoting civic engagement and democratic awareness.
By encouraging young people to understand their rights and responsibilities, the University of Luzon continues to support meaningful community participation and informed decision-making. Project BALOTA reminds every voter that choosing wisely is not only a right but also a responsibility to the nation.
