University of Luzon Archtecxture Students Explore Regional Perspectives in Design and Innovation in the 16th Asia Design Sharing Council Meeting

Design can shape cultural identity, encourage innovation, and influence how communities are represented. These ideas were explored by students from the University of Luzon who took part in the 16th Asia Design Sharing Council Meeting on August 13, 2026 via Zoom.
Organized by the DTI – Design Center of the Philippines, the meeting carried the theme “Design as Soft Power,” bringing together design professionals and creative leaders from across Asia. The session provided students with broader perspectives on how design can connect culture, innovation, and national identity.
Among the featured speakers were Ar. Royal Pineda and Kenneth Cobonpue, who discussed the role of design in shaping the Philippine experience. Ismail Rosdi of the Malaysia Design Council, Jaehyun Shin of the Korea Institute of Design Promotion, Ari Satria of Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade, and Mark Mendoza Ocampo of Auro Chocolate also shared insights on design possibilities, global initiatives, national soft power, and country branding.
Through the participation of its architecture students, University of Luzon students gained exposure to regional design practices and perspectives that can support their professional training. The experience also encouraged them to look beyond aesthetics and consider the wider role of design in communities and society.
These learning experiences contribute to sustainable development through education, innovation, and cultural awareness. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are reflected in the activity through SDG 4: Quality Education, which supports learning through professional training and regional knowledge exchange; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by encouraging innovative approaches and new ideas in design; and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities through greater appreciation of cultural heritage, identity, and the role of design in shaping communities.
