Reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development, research excellence, and community engagement, the University of Luzon (UL) hosted a face-to-face mentoring and feedback session under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Localization Project in Pangasinan on May 7, 2026, at the UL Graduate School Defense Room.

The activity gathered representatives from the Center for Pangasinan Studies (CPS) and its Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, alongside University of Luzon researchers, to provide expert guidance in enhancing the quality and impact of the project’s research outputs. The session encouraged active participation among academic and research leaders, while the involvement of partner institutions enriched discussions and strengthened the recommendations for the study.

Among the participants were Dr. Perla Legaspi, Executive Director of CPS; Dr. Raymundo Rovillos, President of Pangasinan Polytechnic College; Prof. Nicanor Germono Jr., PPC Board Secretary and International Relations Officer; Dr. Gio Albert Cruz, Research Director of PHINMA UPang; and University of Luzon representatives led by Dr. Jeanica C. Joson, Research Director, together with Prof. Darwin M. Juguilon, Prof. Alvin O. Carillo, and Prof. Ma. Theresa H. Bianzon.

A highlight of the session was the presentation of the initial research report, “Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals: An Analysis of the SDG Implementation in the Municipality of Labrador, Pangasinan,” by Dr. Joson. By adopting a participatory research approach, the study examined local programs, policies, and development indicators to assess SDG implementation in Labrador, Pangasinan. The panel commended the study’s relevance and provided valuable recommendations to further strengthen its contribution to evidence-based governance and community development.

The initiative demonstrates how research can respond to local educational needs by providing evidence that informs policy implementation and supports education reform. It also helps shape educational strategies that improve education quality and contribute to school achievement. The mentoring session further strengthened the professional competence of researchers through expert feedback, knowledge sharing, and collaborative decision-making.

The SDG Localization Project advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting research and innovation, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by supporting evidence-based local development planning, SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through transparent and participatory governance, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening collaboration among academic institutions, research organizations, municipal government, and stakeholders.

Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and quality assurance, the University of Luzon – College of Education successfully underwent the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Quality Assessment Team (RQAT) evaluation for its Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) program on May 6, 2026, as part of its application for government recognition.

The evaluation was conducted by esteemed CHED evaluators Dr. Cherrel G. Ignacio and Dr. Ana Maria L. Demot, who carefully assessed the program’s compliance with national standards and quality requirements. The visit commenced with a preliminary meeting where the evaluators discussed the objectives, standards, and criteria that would guide the assessment process.

A thorough review of program documents followed, covering curriculum design, instructional materials, faculty qualifications, and student support services. The evaluators also conducted an inspection of facilities and learning resources to ensure that the University provides an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning. Faculty members and key personnel participated in interviews to validate the implementation of the program and its adherence to CHED standards. The evaluation concluded with an exit conference, during which the CHED-RQAT evaluators presented their initial observations, commendations, and recommendations for the continued enhancement of the program.

The successful conduct of the evaluation was made possible through the leadership of Dr. Imelda E. Cuartel, Dean of the College of Education, whose guidance ensured that all academic and administrative requirements were properly addressed. Prof. Daniel Xerxes S. Padrid, Program Coordinator, played a vital role in organizing program-related documents and facilitating coordination among faculty members throughout the evaluation process.

Significant contributions were likewise provided by Prof. Joerom D. Onofre, focal person for Internationalization, who oversaw documentation and ensured that all supporting evidence and records were systematically prepared and presented. Special recognition is also extended to Dr. Lorena U. Ontangco, Head Librarian, along with Dr. Caren M. Labarejos, Prof. Jocelyn SM. Limjoco, Prof. Jhared C. Calimlim, and the rest of the faculty members for their dedication in preparing instructional materials, reports, and supporting documents. The College also expresses its appreciation to Ms. Tia Jane S. Cayabyab, Mr. Elimar B. Naguinlin, Ms. Van Eimerene Manaois, and Ashley Benj Gajeto for their invaluable administrative support and assistance in ensuring the smooth coordination of activities throughout the evaluation.

Above all, the University extends its heartfelt gratitude to the administration led by Dr. Luis M. Samson Jr., University President, and Dr. Aurora M. Samson-Reyna, Vice President for Academic Affairs, for their steadfast support and commitment to advancing institutional quality and academic excellence.

The successful CHED-RQAT evaluation marks an important step in the BPEd Program and the University of Luzon’s pursuit of academic quality and institutional excellence. This achievement aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, which promotes quality tertiary education and the development of skilled and competent educators. It also reflects SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as the evaluation process highlighted the importance of collaboration among CHED, university leaders, faculty members, and staff in advancing educational excellence and continuous improvement.

The University of Luzon proudly congratulates the College of Education community on this significant accomplishment and looks forward to further advancing excellence in teacher education and professional preparation.
